MyVolunteerPage - Application Form - Phillip Island Nature Park Volunteers by dale rogers

[ad_1]Volunteers Needed We are looking for volunteers on the 12th of January to help clean every beach on Phillip Island at the one time. Photo Rangers is supporting the Phillip Island Nature Park’s clean beaches initiative along with Plastic Free Phillip Island, Boomerang Bags and Paley for the Oceans. In the morning we will be cleaning the beaches (including beaches that are very rarely accessed) and then in the afternoon we will sort through what we find. The event aims to raise community and visitor awareness about the impacts of marine debris and how to help our wildlife.

There will be information on how to reduce your plastics on the day from Plastic Free Phillip Island, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Boomerang Bags and Paley for the Oceans. Volunteers that help for the whole day will be provided with a free vegetarian lunch.

If you are interested in helping with us, sign up here: https://app.betterimpact.com/Application?OrganizationGuid=3a9a5571-86e9-4248-8cee-fec8ffbd3808&ApplicationFormNumber=3

If you are already on the PI Nature Park volunteer list, you can sign up to their preferred beach here: https://app.betterimpact.com/Login/Volunteer

This is a great opportunity to access beaches that are closed to the general public such as Point Grant at the Nobbies, and Storm Bay at Pyramid Rock. All volunteers are required to sign photographic permission forms as part of their sign up, so you would be more than welcome to bring camera gear with you.

We hope to see you there!

Land of the Giants by dale rogers

[ad_1]Land of the Giants Today the family went to the land of the giants, giant California Redwoods or Sequoia trees that were planted as part of a research project near Warburton, Vic in 1927.

Today these trees are massive and amazingly beautiful. The lighting under the canopy was pretty tricky and most of my images didn't come out very nice but here are a few.

I did find evidence of giant dinosaur nests and have a photo so you can see. We didn't spot any running around but maintained our vigilance - you don't want to be caught unawares by a pack of Velociraptors!

Photo Rangers Community 2019 by dale rogers

[ad_1]Photo Rangers Community 2019

Happy Holidays to all y’all! For the past three years in the Photo Rangers Photography Community (https://www.facebook.com/groups/photorangerscommunity/) we have had weekly challenges designed to improve our photography. This year, I’m changing the format a little because I’m worried about the future of photography. I’ll explain why. Our cameras are amazing pieces of technology. They are so good (even entry level cameras and phone cameras) that the technical aspect of photography has become mundane and controlled by the camera. Therefore to take beautiful and stunning calendar shots no longer requires years of experience and expertise as it did in the old film days. Today, in a matter of minutes one can learn to take slow exposure, astro and portraits that equals those years of film experience.

Recently I listened to Skylum Software’s Chief Artificial Intelligence Engineer Oleksandr Sausunko talk about the future of photography. Skylum is the company that produces the editing software Luminar. Luminar uses some pretty fancy AI to automatically enhance skies and do some amazing edits on photos. Oleksandr predicted that within 10 years we will experience cameraless photography. That’s where we tell the computer what we want in a scene and it generates a 1000 or so realistic renderings. We just choose or tweak one of these renders to suit the need. We virtually create images. This blew me away and really fuelled my concern for the state of photography today and the direction it is currently heading.

Running hand in hand with the effect technology is having on photography is the impact of social media. Have you noticed how many photos look similar on Instagram? How places that are highly ‘Instagramable’ are becoming major tourist destinations and that the pursuit of the Instagrammable image has led to some severe environmental degradation in these areas. Fellow community member DäNï Watson has a brilliant ‘Insta Famous’ documentary https://www.iaminstafamous.com/ that I highly recommend you visit.

So instafame and technology have bred a consumerist, soulless form of art in my opinion. This year I want to focus on the art of photography and will ask other photographers to help push our skills, our creativity and challenge what we do with our cameras. I want us to do more with less and strive for the art in our photography. I’ll start off leading the month of January. I hope to see you in the community group!

Along with this post I’ll share a few photos of our Christmas Lunch. Here are the dogs getting leftovers, Cecilia pouncing on our oldest daughter who was laying on the couch and the last of Cecilia sneaking a chocolate. I took these with the entry level Fujifilm X-T100 and a 40 year old Pentax Takamur 50mm f/1.4 lens. The old lens does not communicate with the camera and the focus was done manually. These old lenses can not resolve the level of detail we expect of modern lenses. I also shot in JPG using Fujifilm’s Acros black and white film simulation.

Happy Holidays to you all and your families. Please stay safe and keep shooting!

Cloudy Sky by dale rogers

Bird Adventure by dale rogers

[ad_1]Bird Adventure Yesterday I went on a long hike down the rail trail between Koonwarra and Meeniyan walking over the Blackspur Creek and Tarwin River. It was a beautiful day with plenty of very shy and reclusive birds. Here are a few shots of the Superb Fairy Wren (male and female), White Neck Heron, Red Browed Finch, Little Wattle Bird and an unidentified little bird. He kind of looks like a thornbill but the beak is not like a thornbill. If you can identify the species, let me know.

LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK by dale rogers

[ad_1]LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK It's that time of year where I start reflecting on what has been and thinking about what is to come. I reflect over the past year, select my favourite photos and consider where I will take my photography in the coming year. Or better yet, where will it take me? This is also the time of year I have my photography existential crisis.

I have selected my top 9 photos for the year. These are not technically the best photos I took, not the ones that got the most likes but are the ones that mean something to me, that I personally like more than the others. Here they are. In these 9 photos you will find - 2 intimate landscapes, 2 environmental portraits, 2 wallabies, 1 Ansel Adams inspired landscape, 1 inspirational image and, of course, 1 dinosaur. These were taken with a Fujifilm XT10, XT100, XT2 and XT3 digital cameras and a Pentax Z1-p film camera using AgfaVista 200 speed film.

Just for kicks I have also attached the instagram top nine images of 2018. These are my images that got the most likes on Instagram. Notice the difference between what I like and what others like on Instagram?

Which leads me to the existential part, the 'What next?'.

This year the 'What next?'. is particularly frustrating. I am increasingly asking myself 'What is the purpose of this image?' or 'What story am I trying to tell?' and even 'What feeling does this image evoke?'. I am becoming less interested in creating a pretty picture. I see so many pretty pictures - technically perfect, ND filtered, multi-stitch panorama, popping Milky Way with torch-lit foregrounds and in epic locations on social media that I have become desensitized to them. I suppose this is a logical progression from my exploration of intimate landscapes over the past couple of years looking for the beautiful in the ordinary as well as a rekindled interest in film photography. This makes a little sense to me but you may be scratching your head with no idea what I am talking about. Photography is a deeply personal endeavour and it's a primary means of expression for me. Clearly, communicating in writing is not. My apologies if this makes no sense.

So, I'm still scratching my head wondering what direction my photography will take in 2019. Cecilia and I have a couple of photography projects on the horizon that we are currently designing but other than that I'm not sure where it will go. I suspect I'll get less 'likes' on Instagram as I look for meaning and artistic merit in photography :-). I hope you stay along for the journey.

May you and your family have a Happy Holiday season.

LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK - SILM DUSTY "Looking forward, looking back I’ve come a long way down the track Got a long way left to go Making songs, from what I know

Making sense of what I’ve seen All the love we’ve had between You and I, along the track Looking forward, looking back

There are strange days Full of change on the way But we’ll be fine, unlike some I’ll be leaning forward, to see what’s coming

Looking forward, looking back I’ve come a long way down the track Got a long way left to go Making songs, from what I know

If I’m alone at night, I can see Through all the triviality Of the day and I’m okay I just think of those who are dear to me

Looking forward, looking back I’ve come a long way down the track Got a long way left to go Making songs, from what I know Making songs, from what I know Looking forward, looking back..."
